You have choices. Eyesight Fashions offers many options for quality multi-focal lenses that can be adapted to your personal needs and prescription. New technology has created a wide variety of improvements and options for lens styles.
Progressive lenses are often the best lenses for people with an active life style and a wide variety of visual demands. They give clear and comfortable vision at all distances and offer easy adaptation for most patients. There have been significant improvements in progressive lens technology that allows for less distortion and easier adaptation in the newer lens styles.
Traditional lined bifocals and trifocals still have a loyal following due to their simplicity and cost. Patients that have done well with their lined bifocals or trifocals and have no recognized limitations are often encouraged to stay with what has proven to be comfortable and familiar.
Traditional lined bifocals have been around since Benjamin Franklin glued two different powers of lens together and put them into a single frame. They have proven to be effective and comfortable for many patients. They have the advantages of simplicity, familiarity and reduced cost.
The limitations of traditional bifocals relate to the interference and cosmetic appearance of the line and the problem of an intermediate area of focus that is often deminished as we get older and the powers get stronger.
When traditional bifocals fail to give adequate intermediate comfort for computer, piano, dashboard or other common activities, it is often necessary to upgrade to a trifocal lens. The trifocal style creates an intermediate power that is usually one-half of the bifocal power and allows for comfortable viewing between 24 and 60 inches.
Progressive lenses are designed with your distance prescription in the upper part of the lens with gradually increasing power until you have your full near power in the lower part of your lenses. In the area between top and bottom of the lens, you have gradually increasing corridor that gives comfortable vision at all intermediate distances.
As with all bifocal lenses, there will be a period of adjustment for most people. Each person must learn to find the clearest areas in the lens for each activity that they do. It very quickly becomes automatic and creates the perception of clear and seamless vision.
Progressives vary greatly in technology, design and cost. More recent lens styles incorporate some incredible technological advances to reduce distortions and increase the range of clear and comfortable vision in the glasses.
Most of our progressives are from the industry leading Varilux family of products. Some of the most popular options are listed in the section below.
Physio and Physio 360 progressive lenses are designed so that the power is divided between the front and back surface of the lens to reduce lens aberration and give you broader intermediate and near viewing comfort. These lenses are designed using the new wave front guided technology to reduce distortion and expand the primary viewing areas.
Technica Lenses are designed specifically for use at the computer so that there is a much larger area for intermediate and near viewing activities with a reduced distance viewing area. This style is usually used as an occupational lens and is not good for everyday activities.
Ellipse Short Corridor Lenses allow most progressive lens wearers to have a full progressive lens in the popular small modern designer frames. The smaller frame size reduces the lens thickness and the weight of your eyewear.
When you first start with progressive lenses there will be a short period of time where your judgements of distance will be effected. You may feel a little disoriented and off balance. This should resolve completely within the first month if you wear the lenses consistently. We recommend that you wear your new progressive lenses full time until you make the adjustment.
